With only 180 pieces, this Ravensburger Globe Puzzleball is plenty challenging for an experienced adult puzzler, if it’s assembled from the outside. However, the easy way to assemble it, is to find the numbers on the white backs of the pieces, and then put the pieces together in sequence, starting at one of the poles. The plastic pieces lock snugly together, so it’s easy to construct the globe, which sits on an included stand during construction or for display.

Because I wanted a bit of a geography refresher course, I chose to put the globe together without a picture (there is none in the box, but any world map will do). I started with the continents, which were easy to locate, because of the green and brown colors. Naturally, the hardest part was assembling the blue ocean pieces–especially because I couldn’t remember where the islands of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans belonged! Is Pitcairn Island in the South Pacific, or the Indian Ocean? Assembling the ocean pieces is made easier by colorful little drawings of native birds, fishes, and animals that are sprinkled across the seas, close to the appropriate continents.

The pieces are NOT all uniquely shaped, although each piece is unique as to shape and color combined. I made some mistakes, so had to take some of the puzzle apart to retrieve pieces that fit except for color. You can avoid this by checking the numbers on the backs whenever a couple of pieces don’t look quite right, or don’t quite want to fit together. As an aid to assembly, I used “magic tape” to hold not-yet-supported pieces together. This puzzle took me about 4.5 hours to assemble “the hard way”, and it was a lot of fun.

I agree with reviewers who said this isn’t truly a puzzle but simply an assembly game, as the pieces are all numbered. However, I gave it as a gift to my 11-year old niece, and she loved it.

Even though it isn’t a challenging puzzle, when it’s complete, it IS a functional globe for children, though they need to be careful with it.

    ****
“Discover the world and its various continents and their inhabitants with this Children’s puzzle -ball globe. The large plastic pieces contribute a 3 D visualization and develop kids assembly and space skills. The puzzle ball includes a display stand for ‘picture-perfect’ decoration. The 180 curved plastic pieces fit together to form in almost perfect match to a smooth surface.” *

This construction centered game promotes 3 D geometrical visualization, it comes from the Czech Republic which, decades past, initiated the Meccano, which as children, we enjoyed realizing our early ambitious projects. It may have even promoted one of my kids to study engineering. The age restriction to 8 – 12 is generally the age at which most boys start to develop interest in construction.

I selected this puzzle for my witty 7 years old grand son, Noah, in order to develop his deep interest in geography and build his assembly skills, proved by his fascination with LEGO, since he was 4. I examined the puzzle and found the parts sturdy, but the rigidity of the globe, and the adventure of three dimensional extension of the global shell for kids, depends on their hands-on assembly skills, developed with time and by training.

Unless the kid is curious to discover places, and learn the name of countries and cities, it would not be helpful to propose such puzzle just to enforce educational purposes. Noah examines atlases, his parents take an active part of the second grader ‘entertainment education’, taking him in a journey around North Italy, and across Switzerland from Como to Zurich. Such impact is great, and contributes to his personality, as well as his interests.
